AMDT Study Tours

Study tours are offered annually and provide valuable opportunities for students to learn about the dynamic textile and apparel business while earning school credit. Industry visits are offered in both domestic and international locations. Trips include tours of manufacturing plants, design studios, and corporate headquarters. Buyers, designers, merchants, managers, product developers, forecasters, fashion journalists, sourcing managers, and others have given presentations in recent study tours.

China

This two-week faculty led study tour provides students opportunities to learn the Chinese culture, history, economy, and geography and gain first-hand experiences about business norms and practices in the Chinese fashion industry. Lectures, guest speaker presentations, projects with local college students, sightseeing cultural/scenic sites (Shanghai, Beijing and Xi’An), and visits to world-class fashion companies/factories working with Nordstrom, Ralph Lauren, Nike, PVH, Levi’s, GAP, L.L. Bean, etc. give students the best learning experience to achieve the targeted learning objectives.

Cotton Incorporated

The Cotton Incorporated study tour helps students learn about cotton products and their impacts on consumers, the economy, and the environment. As part of this learning experience, Cotton Incorporated provided funding to support a faculty-led study trip to its headquarters in Cary, North Carolina, where students visited R&D labs, product development studios, and the marketing/ supply chain unit. Students met executives, scientists, product developers, and marketers in the cotton textile and apparel industry.

Los Angeles Study Tour

The one-week Los Angeles Industry Tour expands students’ understanding of the breadth of the U.S. textile and apparel industry. Students gain an appreciation for the “personality” of a major metropolitan area. They also observe and practice the essential elements of professional behavior, dress, and interactions with tour personnel, speakers, and anyone associated with the tour, including fellow students and faculty.

Las Vegas Study Tour

The MAGIC Trade Show in Las Vegas gives students real life experiences in the fashion industry. MAGIC provides a high energy fashion experience and is home to the largest selection of trend-driven and young contemporary apparel, footwear, and accessories in the industry. Students attend the market events held by MAGIC, the seminars and education workshops given by industry professionals, and visit the company booths to gain some buying and negotiation experiences. 

New York Study Tour

New York City is the fashion capital. This one-week study tour helps students learn about the different aspects of the fashion industry through interacting with employees, managers, and business professionals along with on-site visitations to fashion and retail companies such as Ralph Lauren, Coach, Steve Madden, Kenneth Cole, Cotton Inc., Elle Magazine etc. in New York City

Seattle Study Tour

The Seattle Industry Study Tour helps students and faculty gain more industry relevant experience. This two-day program includes a tour of Nordstrom’s and Zumiez’s headquarters, presentations/workshops on retail management, product development and management, materials, sourcing, and corporate social responsibility, and interactions with industry professionals.

Sports Industry Study Tour

This two-day program includes the tour of Nike and Columbia Sportswear campuses in Portland/Beaverton Oregon, presentations/workshops on material innovation, product development, supply chain management, and corporate social responsibility, and visitation of Nike and Columbia employee stores.
