Two Options for Your Major in AMDT
Students can choose an emphasis in apparel design or merchandising. Each option includes the program’s core courses, as well as optional requirements and electives. Students can individualize their expertise by exploring minors and supporting work in business administration, marketing, international business, entrepreneurship, communication or fine arts.
This option focuses on the process of apparel design, from concept to the end user. Design courses cover aesthetics, illustration, computer-aided design, pattern making, draping, sewing, fit, and product assembly. This option provides students with the ability to create a garment and have the opportunity to show case their work at the Annual Mom’s Weekend Fashion Show. Admission into the Apparel Design option takes place through a portfolio review and application process.
This option includes courses designed to teach students the process involved in the planning, buying, and selling of merchandise in either manufacturing or retail organizations. Students choosing this option are shown the importance of understanding all aspects of the industry, everything from the fiber selection to the consumers who are purchasing the items. Classes in this option explore product development, visual merchandising, merchandising strategies, consumer behavior, buying strategies, marketing, and international business.
