Washington State Apparel Industry Highlights
Nationally:
- Washington State has the third largest apparel industry in the U.S. (New York 1st, California 2nd) with approximately 50 companies selling over a billion dollars (Frings, 1999, 171).
- 888 total Apparel/Accessories Retail Businesses in Washington (Department of Labor and Industries, 2003).
- The Apparel industry is responsible for 13% of all employment in Washington, representing more than 300,000 workers. At the same time, the industry provides 16% of total wages in the state, second only to the growing services sector (Bailey & Hardcastle, 2003) with a 19% growth between 1990 and 2002(Lockhart, 2003).
- In 2002, Washington state Exports from Apparel Manufacturers ranked 18th in the nation, responsible for $33, 595,000 out of a U.S. total of $5,994,072,000 (Export.gov, 2003).
- In 2002, Washington State Exports for Non-Apparel Textile Products ranked 14th in the nation, responsible for $37,741,000 out of a U.S. total of $1,981,581,000) (Export.gov, 2003).
- According to the 2003, Survey of Buying Power, the Seattle ranks 17th in Retail Sales in the nation, with sales of $39,491,942,000. (Congelli, 2003).
Statewide:
- Seattle, Washington is 4th largest apparel-manufacturing center in the U.S. (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle). (The Retail Group, 1999, March 22) with 366 total Apparel Manufacturing and Finishing companies. (Department of Labor and Industries, 2003).
- In March 2003, Retail Employment was 10.4% of the total employment for the Puget Sound. (Puget Sound Economic Trends, 2003).
- The 2001, Total Gross Business Income (Welsh, 2001), for the:
- Apparel and Accessories Retail Trade was $4,080,873,244
- Total Washington Retail Trade Income was $87,021,500,012
- Total for all Washington Industries was $412,955,847,328 (.9% of total).
- The 2001,Total Gross Business Income (Welsh 2001) for the:
- Apparel and Textiles Industry in Washington was $580,271,088.
- Total Washington Manufacturing Industry was $84,360,244,498
