Title: Assistant / Associate Professor of Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles
Salary: Commensurate with the candidate's academic and professional qualifications
Position: 9-month, full-time academic position, Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track)
Effective Date: August 16, 2008 or as negotiated
Position:
The candidate is expected to contribute to teaching or two or more areas within apparel design, patternmaking, product development, technical design, and computer-aided design. Also of critical importance is demonstrated capacity to create and sustain a nationally recognized scholarship program and mentor graduate student research and scholarship.
Context:
The Department of Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles is located within the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. The department offers the B.A. and M.A. and is a participant in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program. Majors select between the Apparel Design and Merchandising Options. The department works with the Advisory Board whose members include representatives from the Fashion Group International, J.C. Penney, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Nike, Union Bay, and Eddie Bauer. Departmental resources include apparel design studios, textiles and computer-aided design labs, and historic costume collection. The Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles department has experienced strong growth over the past decade.
Responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate and graduate curriculum in at least two of the following content areas:
- Apparel design
- Patternmaking
- Product development
- Technical design
- Computer-aided design
- Produce a coherent program of scholarly work.
- Provide service to the department, college, university, and community.
- Participate in innovative teaching, curriculum development, and programmatic connections.
- Mentor student activities and organizations, advise graduate and undergraduate students.
- Establish positive working relationships with faculty, students, staff, and professionals.
- Actively participate in professional and academic organizations.
Required Qualifications:
- Terminal degree (such as Ph.D., M.F.A, or Doctor of Design) by date of hire.
- At least one degree in the Textile and Apparel discipline.
- Demonstrate record of scholarship recognized at national level.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Terminal degree in Textile and Apparel discipline or related field.
- Demonstrated ability to teach in higher education in at least two of the following content areas:
- Apparel design
- Patternmaking
- Product development
- Technical design
- Computer-aided design and illustration
- Demonstrated record of scholarship evidenced by design portfolio or research activity.
- An understanding of industry or professional practice.
- Demonstrated ability to establish effective work relationships.
- Record of active participation in professional or academic organizations.
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups with a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies in a global environment.
