WSU Student One of Five to Compete in Project OR
Washington State University, named one of the top design schools in the country by Outdoor Retailer, has been invited to participate in “Project OR,” the trade show’s inaugural student design competition. The competition runs in concert with Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2008, one of the largest trade events of its kind, in Salt Lake City, Utah, August 8-11. The Outdoor Retailer trade show is a focal point for companies looking to do business in the outdoor recreation market, bringing together thousands of buyers and sellers from around the world.
Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles student Casey Stannard will be representing WSU in the competition. She heard about it while discussing various opportunities with her advisor. She expressed interest in the event, but didn’t expect to hear anything more about it. Much to her surprise, she did.

“When I found out it was for real and that I was chosen, I was really excited. Then I started freaking out when I found out that there were only five participants total. That's a big honor!”
After learning she was selected to compete, Stannard hit the books in preparation. “I've been reading a lot of outdoor magazines and talking to outdoor enthusiasts about what they find frustrating about their clothing, and what could be done to improve it. It's interesting to hear about some of the problems people have encountered, especially while backpacking.”
The AMDT department has also been helping Stannard get ready for the competition, examining moisture management and other such movements in the outdoor clothing arena. “We've also kicked around some possible ideas, but it’s tricky to prepare for this sort of thing because I have no idea what I may be asked to do.”
Stannard will find out on August 8, when the competition begins. Participants will have 48 hours to conceptualize, design, and build a prototype garment, which will be revealed on August 10. The winner will be announced at 3 p.m. the same day.
