APPAREL DESIGN OPTION
- Process
The Portfolio Review and Application process for certification into the Apparel Design option happens annually every February.
Here are important dates of Portfolio Review in spring 2009.
- Information session: January 28 (Wed) 4:30pm (right after AMT 315) at TODD Rm 230
An application form will be accessible to academic advisors and students through the main office, and will be available for all on the department webpage.
- Application
. Deadline: Will accept completed portfolios from February 16, 2009 (M) - February 19, 2009(TH) 5pm - Submission: Submit application form, DARS report, and the completed portfolio to the Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles departmental office, 51 Kruegel.
- Contents of portfolio: Organize all 2-D design work in a portfolio binder (binder size: no larger than 14 X 17”) and 3-D design work either in the binder (if possible) or in a labeled hanging garment bag.
- Portfolio showcases your creativity and an aptitude for apparel design not only through design work but also through the way design work are presentedTherefore, select only the best work and carefully edit them. A complete package as a whole speaks about you: Plan overall flow and organization, and design layout, font, caption, and background to reflect who you are as an apparel designer.
- In case of group design work, student’s contribution to the work must be specified. Application form: Submit to department staff. (Please download the electronic form from AMDT website and type in statement)
- Degree Audit Report: Stapled to the original application form.
- Design work : Maximum of 20 combined pages and items
Required
a. Four to six drawings using pencil and other coloring media
b. Two 3-D designs: textile-based construction work (e.g., garment, hats, bags, or samples)
Optional
a. Concept board, statement and visual merchandising design
b. Other materials that highlight creativity and one’s design capacity
- Review
- Reviewers: Design faculty and chair
- Result Notification
- Students will receive their review results in the mail by March 4, 2009.
In accordance with the results, re-advising may be needed for the following semester. Students not accepted into Apparel Design Option need to meet with their academic advisor or the Student Advising and Leaning Center to discuss alternatives within the department or at the university. Students who did not certify into the Apparel Design Option may re-submit their portfolio and application in the following review.

- Portfolio pick-up: February 24 (T) – Friday 27 (F), 2009 at Kruegel 51
- Policy
- Originality of work:
The student is expected to submit his or her own original work. If the drawings are not his or her designs, proper citation information must be visible. - Transfer from the Merchandising option to Apparel Design option:
- Students seeking to transfer from Merchandising are required to certify into the Apparel Design option through the Portfolio Review and Application Process to enroll in upper-division Apparel Design option courses.
- Transfer from other majors at WSU and from other institutions:
- Students currently enrolled at WSU or other institutions and are seeking to transfer into the Apparel Design option are required to certify through the Portfolio Review and Application process to be accepted into the Apparel Design option.
- Exceptions to the above processes and policies are at the discretion of the department chair.
- Evaluation Criteria
a. Academic strength: based on GPA* and statement.
*A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 is required at the time of the portfolio review.

Students may want to retain class projects and assignments for inclusion in their portfolio; in addition, they may include items they have completed outside of the university.
