AMT 490

Cooperative Education Internship

The AMT 490 course is required for Merchandising Option and recommended for Apparel Design Option.  Check with your advisor to be sure of the number of credits needed for internships and to finish up your degree.

Credits range from 3-10 with 6 being typical.  Contact Internship Coordinator for details.

A proactive approach to preparing for AMT 490 is to:

  1. Purchase the Fashion Careers workbook, and do a career focus and strengths self-assessment.
  2. Review career activities per path in the Career Information; identify options that synthesize your interests and strengths; and search for companies that offer those kinds of internships and/ or entry level jobs.
  3. Search widely on the internet for job openings, but also directly contact companies of interest to arrange an informational interview to learn more about that location and career direction.
  4. Go on a field trip to make contacts and learn about companies from the inside out.
  5. Regularly visit career fairs in the years prior to and when you want an internship to gain familiarity with the face-to-face networking needed to land an interview.
  6. Ask family and friends if they have a network you can contact to get into areas of interest.
  7. Stay tuned to the Department of AMDT's email announcements of opportunities that come our way as more and more alums and impressed employers seek out our students for career positions.
  8. It also works to physically move to a location and walk into a wide range of possible places with your resume, a big smile, professional appearance and a request for an interview. Or you can have your resume put on file for opportunities that open.
  9. Study abroad offers an arranged internship and has been one of the strategies Apparel Design students have used to get an internship with a real design company in places like Italy or England.
  10. Some students use their first career jobs to fulfill internship requirements and graduate at the next timeline.
